What I Miss Most - Okinawa

If you haven't seen Rambling of a Marine Wife's post What I Miss Most- go read it first,  I can almost mirror her post, but I'll try to make mine different.

If you have been a follower for any period of time you know I love Okinawa, I love Japan, and we are holding out hope we will someday return to Japan. But for now I have to live vicariously through friends who currently live there and share all the pictures of their adventures on facebook. And I have my own pictures, they document probably the most fun and adventurous three two years and 9 months of our lives. I frequently look back at Okinawa with fond memories of good friends, great food, and so many adventures. I wish I had been more active on my blog during that time so I would have more detailed stories to go with those pictures.

So without further adieu :

The things I miss most from Okinawa
(in no particular order)

Vending Machines EVERYWHERE
Even in the middle of nowhere. I had at least 3 very close to my house, less than a 2 minute walk.  My favorite drinks were, Fanta orange, Aquarius (like a gatorade, but a very mild, refreshing flavor) and Sanpincha (a jasmine-y tea that is also delicious, unsweetened and very refreshing on a hot humid day.) Sanpincha was probably my favorite of all, the best one is in the Yellow CocaCola can with the shisa and hibiscus on it. And in the winter (or in some machines year round) you could get hot coffee too! A cute little can of Georgia Cafe au lait to start your day!

Georgia Coffee. Yummy/

 Bike rides along the coast
I was lucky and both while living on base and off base I was very close to the ocean. Oh wait, on Okinawa you are always very near the ocean... But I was super close, less than a mile I would say. When we moved off base, and Paul deployed, I picked up bike riding as a way to spend my day (and maybe to get to and from the izykaya without driving.) I would frequently spend HOURS out exploring on my bike, going 20 miles in a day was pretty common.

The Festivals
One of the things I could never get enough of is all the festivals, it seems like there was always something, somewhere being celebrated. So much fun.

Food
I could go on for days about the food, oh the amazing and wonderful food, Japanese, Indian, Thai, Greek Gyros, even the Mexican isn't that bad. And seriously the fish was so fresh in most restaurants/sushi joints it was usually caught that day. "Catch of the day" had a whole new, literal, meaning.

Drink (of the adult variety)
Okay, I'm not gonna pretend that Okinawa has an amazing drink selection, you can get most hard liquor, but beer and wine are a little lacking, even on base. But.. I did develop quite a taste for Orion, Okinawa's beer of choice (and locally brewed), and there is always Chu Hi, which, I have no idea what it is, I think it's a mixed carbonated beverage with sochu. I love Chu Hi! and it's a great alternative to beer or mixed drinks.

Fun!
Okinawa (and I would imagine, most of Japan) is just fun, and silly, and cute. The guy at the farm across the street regularly walked his bull. Where else will you see that? There is so much cute, everywhere you look! Even the garbage truck plays a fun song, that sadly reminds Americans of an ice cream truck, but you don't want to run after this guy.
Cute cups of something, inside a free gift mug!

My 'hood
Speaking of the farm across the street, I am so sad but this is the only picture I can find, and it's in the middle of a typhoon. This is taken from my bathroom window, and that little yellow stand is a farm stand that was regularly filled with fresh veggies! They also grew sugar cane and had cows too.
Just down the street there was a woman who ran a little store out of her garage, selling things like beer, sodas, rice, the bare essentials, and occasionally (if you made it at the right time) bento lunches. Much closer than the konbini (convenience store)

Beaches
Most beaches by our house were not "swimming beaches" with beachy sand and stuff, they were very rocky and muddy and full of dead coral and lava rock, so you could do what you wanted, like take your dog for a dip. Or take your fully clothed self for a dip when you ran to hard and far in the heat and you are about to puke (only happened once)

The Late Nights/Early Mornings
Okay, I partied like a frat boy in Okinawa. Paul and I didn't have kids, we had no responsibilities and we partied, hard, and frequently. I am so happy to be a mom, and to have responsibilities, but sometimes I miss it a little.

Driving on the "wrong" side
I dunno, for me driving on the left side of the road seemed more natural, it was more comfortable for me. I super dooper miss that.

It's hard to explain. I frequently get asked "why do you love Okinawa so much?" and I just can't answer. It's everything, every bit of that island I love. You just won't get it, unless you get it. There are a few people I know who get it, where Okinawa is just their happy place. I will always have a place in my heart for that island, and I deeply hope that someday I will be given the opportunity to return.
I could go on forever, but I will call it complete for this time.
I will leave you with a picture of the sunset from my bedroom window.

9 week to do list

9 weeks until Baby E's scheduled arrival. So give or take a few days (or weeks, I guess) I have 9 weeks to prep, and 9 weeks left to do my own thing. I have one more week of work, and then I can focus solely on the list.

1. Find a house in Butte
2. Move into said house
3. Choose a carseat for Baby E
4. Choose/ order/ assemble a crib for Baby E
5. Other misc Baby E set up
6. Read some of the childbirth/parenting books I have

Then there are some things I want to just do for me

1. Finish some knitting
2. and some sewing
3. Finish some of my books that are unrelated to baby
4. learn to play my ukelele (or at least try)

Clearly finding a home and moving is super dooper important. We have so much going on in the next two months outside of the move, things are just crazy in my head. Paul will be going to SoCal for his MEPS training for two weeks. Then a few weeks later we have the Marine Corps Ball, which will be 4 days of mandatory fun time. The ball happens to fall about a month before my due date too, so I'll get to be as big as a whale for the whole thing. Yay! Then a few weeks later Baby E will make her entrance into this world!
I am very lucky my mommy is coming to visit me for a few days at the end of this month so she can light a fire under my ass, because I have a feeling I am not going to get a whole lot done between now and then.

Montana

I'm not going to lie, things have been tough here. I really have days where I just hate it here. I want to go home, back to Okinawa, or to my moms house, anywhere but here. I am not prepared to handle this cold. Every day I wake up and it's less than 35*, It's cold. I HATE THE COLD. It's windy, I HATE THE WIND. Daily the winds are 17mph or more. It picks up around 11 or noon, and gets worse as the day progresses. It makes it hard to enjoy the outdoors when the wind is whipping around making it 10-15 degrees colder. It makes life less enjoyable, I am crabby and don't want to do anything that evolves leaving the house.
I really am trying to make the best of it. We took the bikes out last weekend, We keep trying to go fishing but it's been difficult to get licenses. I spend a fair part of my down time thinking about where I want to go next, I fantasize about California beaches, or North Carolina BBQ. Anywhere has got to be better than this.
But I am going somewhere with all this complaining. Today's list is "Things I love about...." and I chose to find the good things in Helena. I am sure there are more than I have listed, but I just haven't found them yet.

List of a different kind!

I again apologize for not posting often, I've been wrapping up school, still not feeling well, and trying to have a life outside of the internet.
Today I'd like to start out with a different list, this one isn't part of the 30 day list challenge, but it's my personal to do list for the day. Today is my day off and I have TONS to do. Including write a stupid paper.
List of a different kind

and the list challenge (trying to play catch-up)
30DAYSButton

list 10
1. be better at $$ management. (I should start by doing my taxes I guess... so add that to todays to do list)
2. finish school (this isn't happening any time soon, because I hate online classes)
3. loose a few pounds (working on that!)
4. be more green (we were so much better in Okinawa, with recycling and composting and such, not so much here though. That makes me sad)
5. Have more FUN! (life has been a little boring lately and I need to pick it up since it's warming up and have fun!)
6. open my online store. (I've talked about it. I am a very crafty and creative person, i am also lazy and hat has been the winning personal quality of mine lately, but I want to get my shit in gear and do something!)

list 9
{i guess these aren't all really favorites, but the ones i spend the most time on. except failbook. i am passionately in love with failbook}

Weekend Goals

Day 5

These are my goals for the weekend, I know I have to work part of Saturday, and I may have to work Sunday so I may not get much done. But I'd really like to go to the Gem and Mineral show, I know it won't compare to the one in Tucson. The one in Tucson is huge, EPIC, I think it's the biggest one in the US. But it would be nice to get some pretty necklaces or something. Plus I think it'll be nice for Paul and I to do something outside of our routine. We have a habit of getting into a routine and doing nothing exciting or out of the ordinary for weeks. I like routine but you don't get much excitement there.
I also really want to go fishing, but we need to get our fishing licensees, and since we are out of state, but military and plan to become residences we have to go to game and fish, and they are only open M-F.

Todays Playlist

Day 4- Todays Playlist:
List day 4

I just downloaded this album, I loved the music in the movie and it totally had me dancing in my seat. I can't wait to listen to it, I may leave for work early so I can drive around and grove in my car.

Things I am looking forward to...

Day 3: Things I am looking forward to
List day 2
{picture taken in the snow for dramatic effect}
Last night Paul and I went to Buffalo Wild Wings, it's our date night tradition, we go and we have fried pickles and enjoy beers and play buzz time trivia. Last night was the first time we have gone on a Friday, we normally go on Saturday. It was weird the buzztime questions were of strange nature and in a strange format and we were lost and confused and sore losers.
Then we came home and watched our date night movie, 127 hours.
127 hours is based on the true story of a young man who goes out into the Utah desert for a day trip, he goes alone and doesn't tell anyone where he is going. Well the worst that could happen did. He fell and a rock fell and in a small crevice between two rocks he got stuck, his hand was smushed between a rock and a hard place. The movie goes on for the 127 hours he was stuck in the canyon and is quite dramatic and very sad. I cried at the end. If you know the story then you know how it ends, but I wont spoil it for you. It's a great movie and I am really glad we rented it.

Lists and movies!

30 days of lists, day 2
Things I am good at:
List day 2
˚napping ˚not getting lost ˚knitting ˚making lists ˚wasting time ˚making a mess ˚cooking ˚making pico de gallo ˚sleeping in!

well that there is todays list, I am also already making progress on my 101 in 1001, I think so far the thing I am most psyched about is number 14, watch 26 movies I have never seem, each starting with a different letter of the alphabet (+ I am also going to do a number movie, because there are plenty of movies that start with a number not a word!) . Working in a video store makes this way more appealing than it normally would, but because knowing movies is my job, it's sort of like homework, plus I get a decent size employee discount!
My list so far:
#- 127 hours
A- apt pupil
B- burlesque
C- capote
D-
E-
F-
G- gummo
H-
I-
J-
K- kids
L- les miserables
M- my fair lady
N-
O-
P-
Q-
R-
S- Slumdog Millionare
T-
U-
V-
W-
X-
Y-
Z-

obviously I need to work on that list some more, suggestions?
I also need to work on my 101 list, if only I could use each movie for a goal, well I can, because it's my list and I can do what I want with it, but I feel that would be cheating myself.

I watched Burlesque today, and I liked it, I don't like Christina Agulera as an actress but I liked the movie. It got me dancing in my seat, and I loved the actors, the boy in the movie (I have already forgotten his name and don't feel like googling it) looks like Ryan Quentin from True Blood, he's hot. I may download, or buy the soundtrack because I really liked it. I've been sort of dancing around the house since I finished the movie, it really put a little grove in my step.
I've also got rented 127 hours and My Fair Lady. Both I will watch by sunday, so I am already well into working towards this goal!
now if i could just do my reading for school, but i need to make the pico for the taco salads we are gonna have for dinner! okay, i'll read a little first.

Two new projects.

I am going to follow Jackie's suggestion and do the 101 in 1001, the link is here.
I think I am also going to do the 30 days of lists, I like lists, and lists are fun. Ashleigh and Alyssa are doing the lists, too! saying the word list thirteen times makes it a silly word. silly silly word.

First List:
List some things about yourself

30 days of lists, Day 1

It reads:
Things about myself
I am...
lazy, procrastinator, love to watch movies, knitter, dog & cat lover, student, wife, daughter, bad speller, good internet surfer, love my short hair, silly, flip flop lover, addicted to red bull, amature foodie, great cook, daring, amature photographer,
going to be late for work if I don't start getting ready.

and on that note, I'll see you tomorrow!
