How am i gonna do it?

Okay Courtney here's how i'm gonna get healthy

  1. go to the gym twice a week for strength training
  2. walk to the commissary for small things and to check the mail (this will only last until we move because then i'll be like 7 miles from the commissary, and i aint walking that far for bread and milk)
  3. walk to the gym weather permitting (same conditions as above, this will only be until we move, but i may try it once after we move, and if it doesn't suck...)
  4. walk/jog a mile a day (M-F)
  5. no sitting down during the day unless it's for school work or to eat. there are far more important things i can be doing besides watching Judge Judy. like cleaning (i really suck at cleaning)
  6. eat at least one fruit or veggie a day ( i really suck at this, my diet is mostly carbs and meat)
  7. start out each day with either a bowl of oatmeal or slim-fast
  8. have protein for lunch (tuna, PB&J, chicken) as long as it has more than 10grams of protein were good.
  9. cut back on my consumption of empty calories (juice, soda), stick with water and tea.
  10. Continue logging all food/exercise on SparkPeople.com  (which for some reason isnt working this afternoon)
  11. when the pool opens in March i'll also start swimming again, this time every other day (M,W&F)

Why i want to loose weight

Shape Magazine does little bio's on people who loose weight, one woman said her best motivation was to make a list of ten reasons she wanted to loose weight. when she lost her motivation she pulled out the list. her is my list:

  1. I want to feel better about myself
  2. I want to feel better in general, healthy diet is proved to do this
  3. I want to not be ashamed to wear my bathing suit
  4. I want to be able to run without wanting to die
  5. I want to be healthy when i get pregnant, so i can have a healthy baby
  6. I want to have a healthy family and not become an overweight statistic
  7. Someday I want to be a Park Ranger, or work for NPS and being healthy and able to hike/walk long distances would be beneficial
  8. I want to prove to myself that i can do it
  9. I want to get my libido back
  10. I want to have made great strides toward my goal by the time Paul leaves so i am not tempted to give it all up and live off BK and potato chips.

what's your list?

For all my fellow cookers out there

i found this  that you may find interesting, its about how to dry and store your own herbs with your microwave.
also i often find i have way more cilantro than i need when i make salsa, so i'll chop it all up and put all my extra in a tiny little rubbermaid container and put it in the freezer. Since i only use it for salsa, and occasionally soup, it comes out just fine! i imagine other herbs would store well like this too.

off to do some homework!

i'm adjusting to the meds now (and no longer sick as hell) and for the first time in months i feel really good, legitimately good. i can focus, i'm motivated, i want to do homework, i want to work out, i want to do dishes. the last two weeks i would get out of bed to eat, or run to the store, come home and get back in bed. but today, yeah i'm in bed right now but thats where the laptop is plugged in, but this i got up this morning and didnt go back to bed once!(until i came to type this )

i'm so happy.
and i just did 'The Biggest Looser' workout DVD and it kicked my ass! everyone should netflix it or rent it! woo! i feel great!

on a not so happy note

and i'm gonna kill paul, he loaded the dishwasher, full, and didn't run it.
i just drank out of a glass and couldn't figure out why my water smelled like fish, yeah nasty i know, i changed the water in the brita thing, water i poured in my cup still gross smelling, i smell the water in the britta thing, no that smells fine, dump out my cup, the cup smells funny, but it looks clean..... check the dishwasher..... yeah it's dirty. i think i'm gonna go vomit now.

Today was a better day

I started a new ADD medicine last week, and i have been sick, sick as hell. i barely got out of bed friday. yesterday i lowered my dose, hoping to not be as sick, and i wasnt as sick, but i was less sick feeling but feeling sick longer. today i didnt want to take it, but i need it, i cant continue to struggle in school, it's just to hard. and i need to see if i can adjust to it, or i need to call the doctor, so i took it again. same dose as yesterday, and i felt so much better, i felt almost like i am supposed to, more focused, less distracted, and even generally happier than i have been in a few weeks. we went out, ran errands, i got some super great knitting needles at the ¥100 store. came home played with dogdoo and took a bath. now i'm trying to decide what to knit, i want to work on this scarf i started, but i really need to work on that other mitten. i think the mitten will win.

IT IS NOT UN-HEALTHY!! IT'S NOT! IT'S NOT! IT'S NOT!

my love of Hello Kitty is not turning into an un-healthy obsession.

these are merely cute little pots that will be perfect for cooking Top Ramen and heating up canned veggies and dips.
the pot with the one long handle holds about 4 cups and the other with the two side handles holds about 6 cups, and they are so damn cute!
(dont look too closely though, you may see my Hello Kitty chopsticks, and that would blow my cover as a non-obsessed fan)

I Love Lists TOO!

Much like my friend Lori i too am a lover of lists! i have ADD so writing things down helps me not forget and not get distracted. I thought i'd share some fun things i'd like to accomplish.

Things to do with Paul before deployment this summer
  1. sometime around march i'd like to go to Tokyo and Disney Land
  2. we really need to snorkel more
  3. scuba certification, even if we only get to scuba a few times
  4. go camping, at least once
  5. go on a CREDO retreat
  6. Spend a day in Naha, on foot, exploring
  7. workout together, about once a week.
  8.  learn basic Japanese

Things to buy for new house
  1. rugs
  2. pantry cabinet
  3. shoe cabinet
  4. night stands (maybe, we just got new ones but i may use those as end tables in the new house)
  5. bathroom stuff for my bath, i'm thinking white, crisp clean white
  6. guest room provisions (we'll have to save up for this one)
  7. Craft room/Alana's office stuff (sewing machine, other crafty things)
  8. Curtains house wide (i will actually probably have to make these since the windows are very small, but that way they can be exactly how i want.

Rules for the new house (these are the hard ones)
  1. dishes will be done immediately, no more waiting three days to do them
  2. alana cant 'nest' (this is where i make a mess in one spot, of dishes, magazines, coke cans, blankets, i do this often)
  3. clean up after yourself
  4. laundry will be hung up on clothes line unless its raining
  5. laundry will be put away as soon as its dry
  6. no stocking up on food (it's one thing to be prepared, but i more than enough food to feed several armies in my pantry right now)
  7. the dog cannot go out alone
  8. the cat cannot go out at all
Rules for school
  1. i will devote at least one hour a day to school work , per class, and not wait until bedtime for this hour
  2. i will not wait until the last minuet to do my homework
  3. i will study every day
  4. i will not try to do homework in front of the TV
  5. i will get at least B's because i can do it.

not much

unfortunately not much going on here, from my last post you know i aced my term paper (still giddy) i am pretty sure i bombed my final exam but thats okay. i should find out my grade any day now, its not posted yet.
I started my philosophy class this week, it's super cool the only catch is, it's a night class, so two days a week i'm not in until 745. well tonight i come home to a dimly lit house two plates with amazing looking pasta and some wine. YUMM! Paul can cook from scratch, without a cookbook. honestly i had no idea he was capable of whipping up something so yummy. i cant wait for next week!
and i need to knit, gonna try to cast on my second mitten tomorrow.

what have i knit?

i had to take  a short break from the monotony of my term paper (which is going quite well i may add) i have 7 pages down, it has to be at least 5-8 pages, more is acceptable, i am pretty confident i'll hit 10 pages, but my spacing/font/ formatting will not stick because i'm a mac and Teach is a PC so he will receive the paper in very basic form so he can easily open it on his PC. so for him i have no clue how long it will be, the way i see it the longer the better.

I just cant do it

i cant keep up with everything this week.
i will most likely be absent for the better part of the next 7 days, i have a term paper due monday which i am writing on the Donner Party, who traveled from Springfield, Illinois,  to California, and well they got stranded in the Serria Nevada's and had to eat the people who died! super interesting. well this paper that is due in 3 days i just started yesterday. i also have my final for my history class on wednesday afternoon, tuesday night i start my Philosophy class, wednesday morning i have our housing inspection, for moving off base. Plus various baby-sitting jobs over the next few days will tie me up too. I will have a nice break, i have a friend from mainland staying with us over night on tuesday, should give me a nice break before i have my final.

Knitten a Mitten

anyone who has been following me on facebook has seen my status over the last few days. i've been knittin a mitten, not just any mitten but my first mitten, this week i cast on my first cuff, added my first thumb gusset, and almost completed my first mitten.

almost. see that little guy sticking out there, well he needs a home, hopefully i can finish the thumb tonight and i can start the partner to this little guy.

i dont think you non-knitters have any idea how hard knitting cables on size 4(?ithink)needles with worsted weight yarn is, it's damn near impossible, and i've done it ninety two billion times.

no rest for the weary.

This is my first year as a real student, i am really committed this time. I am terrified, i have a final next week 2x as much homework this week and a 5-8 page (leaning toward 8 to get all the extra points i can) term paper due no later than the 22nd (and i havnt even started it). holy crap. i'm actually shaking as i write this. i'd really like to keep my A but i doubt it'll happen, i am fairly certain i'll barely pass the final, maybe, maybe i'll get a C, if i can at least get 75% on the final i may be able to pull a B out of this class. i am so nervous! i've been cramming my brain with knowledge this last few days, i just wish i wouldn't have let myself fall behind. i must remember what i feel like now, and how stressed out i am so i dont let this happen again with my next term, that starts, tuesday..... ugh.
i've managed to accomplish a little monotonous knitting while i am reading though. just a little

Someday i'll accept me for who i am

i'll never be popular
i'll never be the one everyone want's advice from
i'll never be good at everything

i can strive to be good at something
i can give good advice when i'm asked
i can be a good friend to the friends i care about

i'll always be snarky, but you love it
i'll always be selfish, but i'll give you the shirt off my back
i'll always be annoying at times, but think of how fun i normally am!

Thats what friends are for

As you may have noticed, i had a few extra dogs for a few weeks. Well Gerty and Oliver have gone home, their mommy is home from the East Coast now. (Aiko is so terribly lonely at times it's sad) but one of the ways she thanked me was with yarn, and it's some amazing yarn! it's all alpaca, it's so soft i cant stop touching it! i've already started with the cream one, i'm working up a cowl (neck cozy) designing my own pattern so it's going slow but i will hopefully be able to cast on the actual pattern instead of swatches tonight after dinner! behold the power of yarn (sorry the pic's arnt great, the weather has been iffy so the lighting was poor, and it was cold out!)

i love lists

as a sufferer from ADD, and lists are truely my friend, setting goals for each day help me accomplish things that would otherwise be forgotten, or just pushed aside, for me just checking something off a list gives me a good feeling inside, a feeling of achievement, i feel better about myself when i check things off my list.
Today my list was all errands
  • appointment at 0730 on Lester
  • Drop key's back off to Seaside-Housing
  • Go to Base Housing, drop off paperwork, set appointment
  • go to hardware store for light bulbs
  • BX for flash-cards
  • reschedule doctors appt
  • schedule Proctored Exam (final Exam)
the only thing on this list that wasnt done by 11am was the reschedule of the doctors appt. (i has to wait for tomorrow, i think they are closed) today felt great! i got done with all my errands, picked me up some subway, and came home to take a nap and not feel bad about it. (up at 0530=nap for a few hours) now i am going to work on trying to catch up on my reading for my history class because i have a little over a week until my exam.
I'll leave you with some great shots of the Sunabe Sea Wall i took this morning after dropping off keys.

"新居" (new house)

Paul and i found an amazing house this week in the Uzeu neighborhood of Uruma City, on Okinawa. We are so excited to finally have a big place where we can spread out, have space, have a backyard, BBQ without fear of catching the balcony on fire, we will finally have a place for Aiko to play, to roam free without a leash, i can finally have my garden that i've been aching for. we are so happy, plus its HUGE, at least twice the size of where we live now, were talking 1800 sq feet! huge!!!
Some of these pics are plain and a little boring, but they sort of give you an idea of the house, we took Aiko to visit, and she wasnt happy because it was cold and empty and i think it was alot for her to take in, plus she prefers carpet to any other flooring, so we will have to invest in rugs.

A message to all of our friends and family: you MUST come visit (we may stay a few extra years so you have some time to save up) but we have PLENTY of room now, PLENTY!

How to ruin your sisters life Part I

i had completely forgotten about this until my sister told me how i ruined christmas for her forever when she was very young, maybe 6 or 7, as she told me the story i began to remember the specifics.

it was a very long time ago, shortly after Christmas, the two young Rhodes girls were playing with each other (or fighting, which was far more common) at some point Alana became very unhappy with her little sister Andrea, and made a rash decision that would likely alter her sisters life forever. I told my sister that there was no Santa. i'm sure my sister cried in disbelief, but i insisted on making it worse, much worse, not only was i claiming there was no Santa, but I had proof. into the filling cabinet we went, into a box shoved in the back (dont ask how i found it to begin with, i was a very nosey little kid and i knew far more than i should have) the box was full of small little papers, it's what was on these papers that ruined Christmas. Receipts, they were receipts from the presents that were supposed to be from Santa, Santa doesnt get his presents at target, but mom and dad do. i am sure there were many more tears but this was undeniable proof. And there in one final swoop i ruined my sisters youth.

i feel bad about it, especially because it obviously affected her, as she reminded me of it this Christmas, 15ish years later. i dont even remember how i discovered there was no santa, though i am sure it was snooping, finding gifts hidden, and then getting them from 'Santa' a few weeks later.
Andrea if i could take it back i would, i am sorry i ruined Christmas for you, i promise i wont tell your kids when it's your turn to be Santa, well i promise i wont tell them if they are good, if they are mean i'll ruin it for them too. (okay well not really.. maybe)

Tuesday, January 6, 2009

today i accomplished more that i usually do and i am so proud of myself! the day started late, again, as usual. but i got up and cleaned up the living room, then moved all the furniature around and mopped the hell out of it. i pulled up the rug in the living room and it was nasty, so that thing is going to the dumpster friday.
I got dressed and went to the 100¥ store for a few things, followed by the gym for almost an hour, i jogged/ran/speedwalked a mile in 16 min. thats good for me. i'm gonna have to work on that though if i want to do a 5K. then i did some strenght training, i am pretty sure i will be super sore in the morning, but the off chance that i'm not, i'll be heading back to the gym.
i ran a few more errands, getting dinner stuff. then i got home and started dinner. only to discover the garbage disposal wasnt working so i stuck my hand down it and pulled out like 40 little pieces of plastic and it works again!i must admit i did have an irrational fear that somehow there would be a power surge or something and it would turn on and eat my hand. but i had to do it myself (or at least try) the last time i called maintenance because it stopped working they came out, the guy reach in, pulled out a match that was lodged in there, snickered, and left. i wasn’t about to be getting laughed at again because i had crap just stuck in there.

the day ended with me doing lots of homework and some knitting. i'll post some knitting pictures later.
i feel so accomplished

side note, it was like 80 degrees here today,i composed a short letter
dear winter goddess,
i think you have us confused with Australia, were in the northern hemisphere, its supposed to be cooler. not asking for snow but a bit cooler would be nice.
k thx bai

(cut and pasted from Facebook)

okay i lied

in my last post where i said today was boring, i lied, today was very interesting, we'll start with the zombie nightmare at 3 am, yes, paul and i were killed by some crazy mobster hotel worker guy and when the car we were killed in crashed (we were shot while trying to escape), they tried to dispose of our bodies and i said, hey i'm not going out like that (i can usually have some level of control my dreams) so i got up and was gonna fight back, and the guys said, good your a zombie, now you work for us.... yeah i dream weird and vivid.
so i woke up and was a little scared to fall back asleep, when a night begins with bad dreams they usually continue. so i sat up on the laptop until 5am took the dogs out, saw Paul off to work, warned him of possible zombie mobsters, and took a tylenol PM and went back to sleep, more weird dreams, but i dont remember them.
Got up again, this time at 1030 (damn tylenol pm totally knocked me out!) made some tea and talked to mom on scype. got ready for my dentist apt that was scheduled for 130, at 110 they called me to cancel. yeah good think i hadnt walked out the door because i was about to. so whatever.
i got off the phone and i found Aiko in the kitchen sitting on the tile (she hates tile, this was totally out of character) trembling, and looking so sad. she shakes every now and then so i called her over and she sort of got up and took a step and then sat back down. she wouldnt look at me, i thought maybe she did something bad, nope nothing chewed up, nothing doodied on, so i scooped her up and we sat on the couch, she was curled in my arms (again very unusual my aiko is a rambunctious beast even when she is relaxed she wont get that close to faces without licking) and she was just trembling. so i decided to take her to bed where we could lay down and snuggle, she didnt want to, she wanted to lay in the bathroom and just shake, she didnt want anything to do with me at this point, nor did she want toys or treats.
so now i'm freaking out, i call the vet because from what i've heard about dog seizures this can be how they act afterwards for several minutes to hours. the vet tells me to take her to the doggie er in a few hours if she hasnt stopped. i hang up, completely in tears, and run to the bathroom to check on my poopsie. she looks at me (for the first time in nearly an hour) and i collapse on the floor to snuggle her, and she gets up, walks to me and licks my tears away. I'm also pretty sure she said 'it's okay mom i feel better now' and then she went to nibble on my fingers. She's fine now, but were still gonna have a regular vet appt. to make sure everything is a-ok. now she's sleeping like an angel, well an angel with really bad gas.

Paul and i were discussing todays incident later and i remembered that about 1 i was looking for some medical records in the fireproof safe, which is behind the couch, and when i pulled it out the dogs ran back there to get toys that had been thrown/knocked back there. i also remembered that a few months ago we had a MAJOR ant issue and they were coming in through that wall, and we had practically basted those floor boards with RAID. so part of me things maybe she sniffed/licked some residual raid stuff and it just made her feel really bad. i just really hope nothing is wrong with my poopsie. she is my world. i'm gonna keep an eye on her, but not freak out and get all dog hypochondriac on her.

oh and i got my hair cut again today, shorter, i'll get some pictures eventually.
